Mt. Caesar Union Library
Meeting Room Policy
(revised fall 2010)
I. The MCUL Facility
1. When George Carpenter deeded the facility to the MCUL Association in 1885, he made this stipulation: "The building shall always be kept for literary purposes and for the promotion of knowledge and intelligence among the inhabitants." He also stipulated that activities such as gambling, dancing, and card playing were forbidden.
2. The Meeting Room on the second floor, as is common for buildings of this era, is not handicapped-accessible.
II. Group Meetings
1. Free use of the library meeting room is granted to community groups and organizations whose goals are educational, civic, or cultural, and does not include political or other non-civic organizations. The meeting must be open to the public at no charge. Donations to the library to defray expenses, especially by frequent users, would be accepted.
2. Groups wishing to use the space do so with the understanding that the library program has priority in its use. Use of the space must occur only during library hours unless special arrangements are made.
3. Permission to use the meeting room does not constitute endorsement of the user group's philosophy or objectives by the library, its staff, and/or the trustees.
4. If the librarian is uncertain of the qualifications of any group or organization asking to use the meeting room, the trustees will be consulted before approval is given.
5. The MCUL trustees reserve the right to alter these rules as deemed necessary.
III. Use of the Room
1. The library assumes no responsibility for private property brought onto the premises.
2. Smoking and the use of alcohol are prohibited. Light refreshments only may be served at a meeting.
3. The user group is responsible for care and maintenance of the room, INCLUDING TRASH REMOVAL. The room must be left in a neat and orderly fashion.
